Behind The Story

During the summer of 2022, I began drawing this character from my own experiences and the experiences my friends described to me of feeling conscious of their own appearances and bodies in public, especially when traveling alone. It started to become clear to me how a looming sense of danger constantly existed for certain targeted groups of people, training them to constantly be on guard and protective of their physical qualities that may make them stand out to an attacker. For these groups of people, "looking down" is the line of defense they activate for their own safety when presenting themselves in public. I imagined the hoodie, sweatpants, and glasses combo as a form of modern day "armor", concealing any sign of difference from peeking out.
